The Petition
The highly anticipated Battlefield 2042 is finally here and many of us are thrilled to get our hands on a copy. Unfortunately for some, DICE and EA have decided to not support keyboard and mouse on console despite their venture into cross-platform gaming for Battlefield 2042. Under their recent blog post geared towards Positive Play, DICE / EA stated “We’ve heard your questions about mouse and keyboard support for consoles. We can confirm that we won’t be supporting this on consoles at the launch of Battlefield 2042, but we are still investigating the various options about making that available, and how it may impact cross-play. If that ever changes, you’ll hear it from us first.” While they mentioned that they are still investigating the possibility, I believe we won’t see that feature for a long time to come, if it ever comes.
There is a large percentage of the gaming community that is unable to upgrade their PC systems to meet the requirements of Battlefield 2042. This is due to the limited availability of PC parts, and whatever parts that do become available are being bought by scalpers and resold at double the MSRP. What was once $300-$600US to upgrade your graphics card is now $1000-$2000USD (ridiculous!).
With the release of new-gen consoles (Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S) many PC gamers have taken the route of gaming on consoles using keyboard and mouse. These new systems now have the power to match high-end gaming PC’s and with the new direction to cross-platform gaming, it seems like this is the preferred route until PC prices normalize (if ever). Many Triple-A titles now support keyboard and mouse on console especially now with the direction to cross-platform. Just to name a few of these titles:
- Call of Duty - Black Ops Cold War
- Call of Duty - Modern Warfare
- Call of Duty - Warzone
- Call of Duty - Vanguard
- Day-Z
- Fortnite
- Halo Infinite
- Gears 5
- Gears Tactics
I believe with the move towards cross-platform in Battlefield 2042, we should have the choice of peripheral whether it be a controller or mouse and keyboard. One may believe that controllers have a disadvantage going against mouse and keyboard but with aim assist and other movement advantages, that is not the case. Call of Duty has enabled this feature for a long time now and it turns out both peripherals have their pros and cons. By enabling keyboard and mouse support on consoles, you are now giving these gamers a choice of preference, after all, console players are already going up against PC in BF2042 (if EA/DICE thought Controller vs KBM was unfair play, why enable crossplay in the first place).
With the lack of KBM support on consoles, we will see a rise in adapters like Cronus ZEN and ZIM Apex. These devices allow a player to connect a keyboard and mouse to their system which enables modding to give them an inherent (and unfair) advantage in-game.
On behalf of the ConsoleKBM community, I respectfully ask that you consider enabling keyboard and mouse support on consoles as soon as possible. Not only will this help the community in regards to lack of hardware availability, but also help in playing fair. It was truly heartbreaking when the news about not supporting KBM was released. So much that I had to take the time and effort to create this fan-based BF2042 themed petition in hopes that EA/DICE will enable KBM on console. I believe that crossplay is the future of gaming, please allow us to choose our preferred method of play no matter the system.
Your Biggest Fan,
– Shadow
Proposed Solution
From a console perspective, Keyboard and Mouse should be tied to Cross-Play. If Cross-Play is enabled on consoles, then Keyboard and Mouse controls should be enabled. If Cross-Play is disabled, then Keyboard and Mouse controls should be disabled as well. That is the only fair way I see forward.
Summary
- Price surge in PC parts making it too costly to upgrade or build new computers.
- Limited availability of PC parts making it difficult to purchase from stores.
- Scalpers using bots to purchase parts then reselling above MSRP.
- PC gamers now using current Gen consoles as they are power comparable to high end gaming PC's.
- Other Triple A studios now supporting keyboard & mouse on console in both cross-platform and non cross-platform games.
- Lack of keyboard & mouse support will encourage more players to use Cronus ZEN and ZIM Apex peripherals.
- Disabling keyboard and mouse means lack of support for peripherals for disabled gamers.

Thanks a lot for this petition. I totally agree with your arguments and I also bought an XSX instead of a new PC, in the hope to play FPS with KBM since it was possible for Call of Duty or Gears since Xbox One… Do you plan to make other petitions like this, or maybe a subreddit to gather the persons who play on console with KBM ? To be honest there is a lot of game that I would enjoy to play with KBM on console : - Back 4 Blood (like BF2042, it’s crossplay but no KBM support on console…) - Far Cry 6 (Ubisoft supports KBM for Assassin’s Creed or Fenyx Rising but not for a FPS ?! Srsly wtf…) In the hope that KBM will be supported for all games…

I have to say I agree with everything you said in the petition. So many other studios are not using an 'evolved' approach to matchmaking by either making it input based, or giving controllers significant degrees of aim assist to make them competitive to some extent (see Halo Infinite). Myself, like many other lostwithstanding PC gamers have had to move to next gen consoles (Series X) in order to get a playable experience on new titles.

K&M support is standard for games nowadays. Alot of people who have arthritis or cannot hold a controller will be helped by this. Also people who like to play with K&M or not good with controller will use it and play against other PC players. It is such a bad idea to not have this support. This idea has so many positives and zero negatives.

I play Call of Duty much more than any Battlefield recently due to the only reason, which is KBN support on consoles there. Needless to say, I enjoy Battlefield as a game more, but like many others, I just cannot handle gamepads in competitive shooters. That is it, the reason I skip BF 2042 for a time being.

I live in Brazil and unfortunately few people are able to buy a new generation console. I can't find matches only against PS5, I keep looking for a player and can't find it, never manage to organize a match, always go back to the lobby. I am forced to opt for crossplay. Without mouse and keyboard support, the game lost all meaning, as it became unfair. I believe I should look like an AI for those who use mouse and keyboard. I won't play until I have support.

I cannot afford PC, so console is my only option. However, it's extremely hard to compete with PC players - especially for new console owners who have never played on controller before. I love all of the Battlefield series, but I cannot play the latest one like that. I hope KBM will be supported soon; until then, I'll have to stick to CoD.

My friends and I bought Vanguard and skipped Battlefield for now because we're disappointed in EA/DICE for not implementing mouse and keyboard support on consoles. We can't and won't play a shooter with a controller. It just doesn't feel right. It also doesn't feel right that they have cross play enabled but limit console players to controllers. CoD/Warzone was a game changer since it brought together both controller and mouse and keyboard players. I don't understand how DICE/EA can argue that this is something related to fair play. There's nothing fair about it to play against mouse and keyboard players.

I solely bought a PS5 to play the new battlefield. Was previously a PC gamer on BF3 and BF4. That PC has died so I figured the PS5 would be the best bang for my buck. I was planning on playing with PC friends from back then, but with a controller against KBM, that's just not worth it. Battlefield2042 is meant to be the "community" Battlefield, so please take note of these requests. I'm really hoping that KBM support for consoles has priority. in the development. It would be very much appreciated.

I just want to say I been gaming for a long time using PC but my machine is old and can't afford a new one. It can't play the newer games so I got a PS5. I am unable to play a lot of games with a controller because of very bad arthritis in my hands I am unable to hold on to the controler. I feel by not putting the KB and mouse option in the game is discrimination against the handicap, everyone should be able to enjoy the game. I found other game companies are starting to do it, why do you not like handicap or disabled people playing your game?

No MnK support on console even when there is crossplay? It will not change anything if they give the option to do it when crossplay IS ENABLED. Those who do not like MnK are already decided to disable crossplay. Gyro/motion aiming support should also become. Available when crossplay is enabled. PC has these options but consoles does not. Is that fair? No it is NOT!

Mouse and keyboard support, gyro aiming, etc. not just to give console players a competitive edge in shooters but also to provide better controls and input in other games that haven’t quite made a splash in consoles like strategy games. It would go a long way in bringing these types of franchise to consoles, it would benefit everyone.

Once again, it is not FAIR PLAY when crossplay is available but we CANNOT choose our own input peripheral. I believe many console players do hope to see this issue being solved after fully release. I also understand that the dev are currently under considering state. But come on it is a next gen FPS game, at least give us an option to choose while the cross play is enabled and locked to controller only while crossplay is disabled.
